Atlas Hedrehely

Ravenna Westerhout, 2020.

Site: Hedrehely, Hungary

Hedrehely is a small village in the southwest of Hungary. With its 300 inhabitants, it is almost extinct, following the fate of many other rural villages in Hungary and Europe. The only economic force driving what is left of the town is the agriculture business.

In “Atlas Hedrehely - a village biography”, a cultural-historical research is conducted, visualized and placed in the larger whole of the country of Hungary. The main purpose of the Atlas is documenting the current state, the stories of a vanished age, of hope and despair, so that future generations will understand the Hedrehely of today. To create change and innovation, and to envision a better future, I believe it is essential to truly understand the history of a place. From our understanding of this history, a better future can be created. I hope this research atlas will help to build this future, a future where the old and the new are intertwined in a positive way.
